Dualit 2-Slice Toaster, Chrome

Dualit 2-Slice Toaster, Chrome
Product By Dualit        (66 customers reviews)
Lowest Price : $228.99

Technical Details

  • Extra-wide, 28-mm slots accommodate a variety of bread products
  • Award-winning ProHeat elements increase toasting efficiency and element longevity
  • Ejector system keeps toast warm until the ejector lever is pushed up
  • Removable crumb tray; adjustable rear foot
  • Switch-system controls the degree of browning

Product Description

The Dualit toaster is outstanding in the field, not just for its industrial retro good looks, but also for its performance. It has ProHeat elements and wide slots capable of handling very thick slices, yet the adjustable wire guards will accommodate themselves to thinner bread too. The timer knob allows you to select light, medium, or dark toast and at the end of the cycle the toast remains in the slots until you eject it with the knob - this keeps the toast warm, but because the unit shuts off at the end of the cycle your toast won't be burnt. Sturdy metal housing and heating elements made from the finest quality clear mica and 80/20 nickel chrome are good indicators that this is a toaster that will stand the test of time. In fact the Dualit toaster was designed for commercial use in English hotels and restaurants where the toaster may be in continual use for 8 hours, mandating that the heating elements be of heavy construction.

"Don't let the price fool you.............." 2010-10-23

I bought this toaster for my husband. He wanted it because he read somewhere Queen Elizabeth
has this same toaster. Anyway, it's expensive and makes lousy toast. The bell that rings
when the toast is done broke not long after getting it. Now I have to unplug it to turn it off.
My whole kitchen filled with smoke the other day. It's in the trash now, waiting for pick-up.

"Six Years Old and Still Going Strong" 2010-07-11
By J. Walker (Auburn, California)
I can't complain about the little quirks because this toaster was a gift that was bought at Williams Sonoma. In the early days there were many times that I wanted to get rid of it, but couldn't justify it since it worked. Yes, I've had to stuff certain sizes of bread in it and squish fat bagels, and felt like throwing it through the kitchen window, but over time I learned to love it. It's awful sturdy, really pretty, oozes quality, and looks so bright and shinny in my kitchen. And it's got a life time warranty since it's from Williams Sonoma. They come from England and each toaster is hand built by the same person from start to finish. No assembly line here. Kind of impressive.

Times change and so do eating habits. Mine changed to healthy. I don't eat bagels anymore. I only eat corn rye and sprouted rye from Trader Joe's and Thomas's whole wheat english muffins and sometimes I splurge on crumpets, all which fit nicely into the toaster. When I get to the big slices of the corn rye I just cut the slice in half. Works for me. Plus I hardly burn any bread anymore since I've learned how long each item takes.

Would I buy one of these new Dualits? I don't think so as mine is going to last forever since it has a lifetime warranty. But the two new upgraded ones at Wiliams Sonoma look awesome and have all kinds of new settings and I will admit to drooling over them. However, the four slice is $339 and the two slice is $256 and I can think of other uses for that kind of money. If you are rich, or willing to eat beans for a while and want a quality toaster, go for it. I might add that those colored ones that I saw on Amazon and other places are really ugly and are garish and cheap looking IMHO. Stick with the stainless from Williams Sonoma.

"Overpriced but works well" 2010-03-10
By Vicious Lips
I received a refurbished canary yellow Dualit as a house-warming gift.

Pros:

1. Fast heating - haven't had a problem with it taking ages to heat up. For first time toasting in the mornings, I just set the timer to go a minute extra and the toast comes out just fine.
2. Myriad of really pretty colors - these toasters really ARE pretty.
3. There's a little arrow on the the timer knob that I've found keeps toasts to a perfect level (between 2 - 3 minutes).
4. The little lever that helps the toast go up and down is pretty nifty and really works when you have things that are too big for the slots (see (5) and Cons (3) below).
5. Since there is no pop-up mechanism, the toast stays warm in the toaster until you use the nifty little lever to bring it up. As an avid fan of crisp Marmite soldiers, this is an awesome feature.

Cons:

1. Large countertop footprint. You can kill a buffalo with this.
2. Sometimes uneven toasting - I can't figure out if the top gets darker first or the other way around. It's a little aggravating but it doesn't happen all the time.
3. The much touted "wide-slots" isn't really that wide. A bagel can barely fit in there without any external help.

In conclusion, I would never actively pay $200 for a toaster like this, even if it's heavy and looks really, really good, and is a British institution. It toasts well (most times), is easy to use and seems durable. But I guess the same can be said of those $10 toasters you get at Walgreens.

"DUALIT HAS POOR QUALITY ELECTRA-CRAFT HAS POOR SERVICE" 2010-02-16
By P. R. Patel (Kentucky)
I have bought three of these toasters. The first one lasted for about 6 years. The second had to be sent back three times for warranty work. The third one stopped working right after the warranty ran out 16 months. All three had the same problem. The dial switch went bad. Electra-Craft the National Distributors have the worst service possible. The fact that Dualit's quality has gone down along with the only service company you can use knows you have to pay them and arm and leg for fixing simple problems I would recommend you stay away from these toasters. Considering the price you would expect more quality and service. But the Jersey boys of Electra-Craft don't care enough. "Nobody makes a good toaster anymore, including T-Fal" 2010-10-14
By M. M Magliaro (Philipsburg, PA United States)
It's overpriced, cheaply-made junk.

The lift levers are linked with a flimsy metal/spring mechanism.

We've only had this thing about 2 months and already the right-side lift

doesn't work. The lever gets jammed up inside and won't lift the toast out.

The right side also does not heat nearly as quickly as the left anymore.

It did when we got it.

Getting the levers to stay down when you start toasting is a pain. You often

have to push/hold them several times to get them to stay down.

I've tried a few different toasters over the past 3 years. I expected better

from a $50+ product. But it is finicky,

cheaply-made junk like all the rest.

Honestly, all a toaster is is some heating coils, some springs, and a case.

What happened to all the basic, battle-hardened chrome steel toasters we had as kids

that you could drive a tank over, and which worked forever?

This is ridiculous.

"Toasts well, breaks easily" 2010-10-02
By Steve (Iowa, USA)
We've had this toaster almost a year and it toasts nicely. The bagel feature is very nice toasting on one side and warming the other side. My complaint is the lifting mechanism which raises the toast out so you can reach it is very flimsy. The right side quit working after about 3 weeks. The left side still works only because we are very very careful with it. If the toast / bagel isn't all the way up when you use the lifting arm it will jam or break. I've read many reviews with the same complaint, so it's not just our experience. Our next one will be a Kitchen Aid. I would not recommend purchasing this toaster.

"Too old to wait for toast!" 2010-08-15
By J. Jack (Maine, USA)
We bought this toaster 2 years ago and at first it seemed to do a good enough job, but it took FOREVER (over 3 minutes for "medium" toast). The longer we've had it, the longer it takes to toast...we're up to 3.75 minutes, now....and recently two of the four slice slots refuse to heat at all. We will replace it, but NOT with a T-Fal. Sometimes a higher price does NOT mean higher quality; although my husband comes pretty dear and he's worked out very well for the past 30-odd years!

"Replaces our old T-Fal 2 slice toaster" 2010-04-23
By Beckie L. Sheldon (PALMYRA, ME, US)
We had the same toaster but only in the 2-slice version for over 15 years. It was not toasting as well so we decided to get a new one. No other ones on the market have the same features so we came back to this one. T-Fal has never failed us and they continue to give value with quality.

"Uneven Toasting and Off White Color" 2010-04-08
By Kenneth A. Close (Port Ludlow, Washington USA)
Ordered and received the toaster promptly from Amazon. I experienced uneven browning of bread. I tried several batches of toast and one side was brown and the other side would be barely brown. Also, the toaster was suppose to be white, but I would call the actual color cream when comparing it to our appliances and old Cuisinart toaster. We returned the toaster to Amazon and will order a different brand.

"worked great, for a month!!" 2010-08-01
By shannon lopes (Hyannis, MA United States)
I purchased the toaster on June 14. The toaster performed as expected until July 30th. I think we may have used it 10 or 12 times total. Suddenly one morning while the kids were at the table waiting for their waffles, the right side stopped working. unfortunately the Amazon return window expired on July 17. So now it's broken, and were stuck with it!

"Black Toast" 2010-06-22
By Joan A. Cowley
Love the looks of this toaster however it is extremely difficult to get it to toast at the right degree you want. Also, the knobs that you use to adjust the degree of toasting are most difficult to know where it is set. A good idea (which I did) was to color the small line with a marker that would not come off. Overall I am sorry that I purchased this toaster and wish I could return it and try another one.

"Wonderful Waffles" 2010-05-10
By 4everlearner (Florida, USA)
The toaster elements seem to only work on one side because they don't glow as red as the other side. Even so, the waffles turn out great! I was a bit concerned about buying a toaster online where a return might be a hassle, but because of the positive reviews I read, I decided to take the risk. We haven't tried bagels yet, but the frozen waffles and bread come out the way we like.

"SUPERB!" 2010-03-10
By Jazz Guy
Who cares if the toast is not done quite so much on one side?? Life is too short to concentrate so much attention to things like that! People, the thing is, the toaster works just fine! And it does so as it says it will...time after time, and for this price can we please drop the petty complaints! I am even impressed by the bagel feature, which I thought would be a bogus add-on, but mine functioned perfectly. (Use this setting for English muffins, by the way). All in all, 5 stars for being what it says it is, usability, ease of maintenance, and product functionality. HIGHLY recommended.

"junk" 2010-09-22
By Matt (Reston, VA)
I needed a new toaster, and while I knew I could get a basic one for $15, I figured that since it wasn't something that I buy that often, I might as well splurge and get a good one. Cuisinart was a name that I (apparently wrongly) associated with quality, and I liked the cool retro look of the model, so I bought this one.

Big mistake. Cool looks are about all this thing has going for it. You want toast? Good luck.

As far as I can tell, despite the dial indicating multiple levels, this thing actually has two settings -- "do nothing" and "blacken". Seriously, it was nearly impossible to get anything in between. Set too low, and the bread would come out warm, but still white. Set even slightly higher, and it would be burnt. The dial on the toaster goes from "1" to "6". Set at "1" or "2", the toaster did nothing but warm the bread. At "3", the bread was black. I can only imagine that at "6" it would have just caught fire. I didn't try.

As far as the settings go -- as far as I could tell, the "bagel" setting seemed to make no difference. My understanding of these things is that in the normal mode, both sides of the item being toasted should come out toasted evenly, while in "bagel" mode, it should concentrate the heat on the inside sides and leave the outside sides largely untoasted. Not so here. I couldn't tell a difference.

I tried and tried to get it to work, but each new thing that I attempted to toast became an exercise in trial and error, and I quickly got tired of sacrificing multiple slices of bread, bagels, etc. in attempting to get an acceptable result. Needless to say, this toaster went straight back to the store in a matter of days. I picked up a less expensive, but equally nice Oster model with all of the same features instead and couldn't be happier with it.

Avoid this one.

"Great so far, but I have my fingers crossed . . ." 2010-09-01
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann (the Lehigh Valley, PA)
Several years ago I bought a Cuisinart toaster that was a piece of junk (it burned everything), but I took a chance on this toaster since it seemed more sturdy than the last. So far, after a month of daily use, it works great, both on regular and bagel toasting. It has wide enough slots for bagels and thicker slices, although, not surprisingly, homemade bread with one-side wider than another gets toasted unevenly and sometimes doesn't fit.

I had several criteria when purchasing this toaster: it had to have a bagel setting (with most of the heat on the interior); it had to feel sturdy, with some weight; it had to have a "stop" button (instead of requiring a yank on the handle); it had to have wide slots; and, of course, it had to toast bread without burning. This toaster has all those features plus a defrost cycle (low heat) and an easy-to-remove crumb tray. As with many new appliances, the first few uses created an awful smell which, fortunately, dissipated. The thermostat correctly toasts/heats everything from toaster pastries to thick, wholegrain bread.

Some helpful hints when toasting bread: breads with high sugar content need a lower setting than white bread; English muffins are always tricky since they have raised areas and deep holes, and often they require more time than average bread; the bagel setting heats both sides but has more intense heat in the center. You'll probably have to fiddle with the settings until you discover the ones that you'll use everyday and for special cases.

Given other reviews, I'm a little nervous about longevity. You'd think that if we could put a man on the moon, we could create a fantastic toaster, but, alas, that doesn't seem to be the case. This toaster gets five stars from me because it beats (so far!) most of the competition, not because it is perfect. If it fails within a two year period, I'll be back to change my star rating.

-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

"What happend to Cuisinart??" 2010-07-30
By bobbijo
I always thought that when you bought a Cuisinart anything, you would be assured of high quality and reliability, so I never minded paying their higher price. I have used their food processer for many years and it is a workhorse in the kitchen but this toaster is a major dissappointment. The toast comes out ok but really...how hard is it to toast bread competently?? My gripe is that it is falling apart after less than two years of use. First the setting dial kept falling off.(We leave it off now and just use one setting) and yesterday the push-down lever fell out! Nothing seemed broken.. it just keeps falling out of the slot. We are only two adults... no kids use this so it is not abused. I noticed that Cuisinart now sells less-expensive "reconditioned" product in different packaging in discount and job-lot stores. I think it is all the same product. Must we keep filling up land-fills with cheaply made junk?? I am on my way to get a new one... NOT a Cuisinart!

"Absolute piece of junk! :(" 2010-07-28
By Durango Dave
We bought one of these toasters in February 2008 because the design fit in nicely with our remodeled kitchen. The toaster died in December 2009. It never did toast that evenly - the elements on the outside do not toast as much as the elements in the middle. I can live with that, but a $60 toaster should last more than two years IMHO. It just quit toasting on the outside elements and would no longer latch down to toast.

Since the toaster has a three year warranty, I got it replaced. But it cost me $13 to send the toaster to Conair (the parent company that owns Cusinart) and another $7 for shipping the warranty replacement to me. So after several weeks and $20 we received the new toaster in January 2010, which did not toast any better than the first toaster. Now this toaster has died exactly the same as the original toaster, except that this toaster only made it seven months before it quit working!

So I called customer service and they said they would replace it again but only if I send the defunct second toaster back to them. Why would I expect that another one of these pieces of junk would last any longer than the first two?? Just more cheap junk made in China destined for the landfill!!

If I could rate this product zero stars I would. Do not waste you $ on this cheap piece of junk!!! :(

"Baffled..." 2010-07-16
By Walter J. (ASTORIA, NY, US)
So, I bought a Black & Decker toaster that looked similar to this one and it didn't toast evenly so I returned it. I thought that perhaps I should spend a few extra dollars for the super cute Cuisinart. Wrong! I bought one and it only toasted one side of the bread. I returned it and held off on buying another one because I was just baffled by all of these dysfunctional toasters. Finally, today, I broke down and bought another Cuisinart thinking that perhaps I just got a bad apple, but this one only toasts one side of the bread as well. I would think that at the very least, a $60 toaster should toast both sides of your bread. If I could have given this toaster a lower rating, I would have. Ridiculous.

"Bodum toaster" 2010-09-26

I have found the Bodum toaster to be excellent at toasting and easy to use. The warming capability is easy to use also. It is also easy to clean and is reasonably priced.

I would say that this is a wonderful toaster and that the fact that it's atypical in style and has choices of color make this one fun for those who enjoy bits of color in their kitchens.

"It's hot!" 2010-09-17
By Michael De Chellis (California)
This toaster is really hot! We like all things modern so when we went looking for a knife block we found Bodum and then we found the toaster. What a great surprise to find that not only did it have the modern look we like but in a color that goes with our kitchen decor of lime green and navy blue. We chose the lime green as an accent for the navy blue chairs and it looks really great. Two things of note are: the lime green is not as bright as it appeared on our monitor and the actual toaster color was a shade off from the knife block which we also purchased in lime green. However, since they're not real close to each other the shade difference does not stand out and so, all things considered, I'm happy to have them since it is nearly impossible to find a modern appliance that look this good in a color of my choosing. As for the toaster toasting; it works well and pops up rather quietly compared to our previous one which always came up with a bang sometimes shooting the toast out onto the counter. The rest of the features work as they are described in the spec without any problems.

This holy toast stamp is hilarious! Make sure you press it down on the untoasted bread pretty well before you toast it. And the toaster setting can't be too high because then you won't be able to see the image. If you do all this right, the image that you get is very clear and funny! Great conversation piece.

Last Christmas, I bought the Fred Holy Toast Stamper as stocking stuffers for adult members of my family. Given the "miracle" aspect of seeing faces of religious icons in mirrors, windows, potato chips, etc., it is a special gift indeed. White bread with little substance, like Wonder bread, etc., produces the clearest image. Great gift because it's a safe bet the person you are buying for probably doesn't already own it -- just make sure they have a good sense of humor.

"Did they even test this before putting it on the market?" 2010-10-27
By Texi
It seems there must be some inconsistency in these toasters b/c some reviews report it works fine. But I can tell you in my personal experience, I've developed a hatred for this model. The toaster looks nice enough, very pretty stainless steel... but it functions horribly.

Three complaints:

1. Like many others have said here, all the high settings on this are useless, as it will incinerate your toast. When I first got this toaster 3 years ago, I found that the setting 2 (out of 10) would toast it just enough without burning. Now it's somehow worsened... I can only toast bread on 1 or else it burns.
2. It has never managed to toast anything evenly.
3. The release mechanism catapults toast into the air, literally. Sometimes I have to go searching for my toast once it's done because it has been tossed behind the toaster. Other times it has landed on the floor. Seriously, could they not at least get this one right?

The only reason I gave this toaster 2 stars instead of 1 is because I have yet to find a toaster that works perfectly. But I've used plenty of toasters better than this.

"RE: FINALLY!! A Great Toaster!!" 2010-10-08

The Breville CT75XL Ikon 4-slice toaster is awsome! We have tried a number of toasters over the last several years, and none of them worked very well. It has been very frustrating until we got the Breville toaster.

This Breville unit toasts quickly, evenly, and to the right amount every time. We set it at "5" (the halfway point) and it works best for us on everything, even hard to toast Sour Dough or multi-grain breads. Note that if you are toasting "Wonderbread", you will want a lower setting such as "3".

I'd recommend this toaster for anyone who uses a toaster.

"How to speak Australian" 2010-09-28
By Jean-Luc (Putnam Co., NY USA)
This is the first Australian appliance ever for me. There was about everything right about this toaster except for its price. So I got it from Amazon refurbished at half of regular Amazon price and almost third of what Williams-Sonoma asked. I expected some signs of use, but couldn't find any. It also stunk for awhile like brand new unit when first turned on.

So far I couldn't find anything to complain about. The Pane de Casa slices are hard to pick up with finger tips, but $.99 mini-thong from Party store does the job. I also use it for frozen pancakes and bagels with excellent results. Never needed to go higher then 6, so I understand why other reviewers were wondering why they designed it with 9 levels. I think it was done to address some inevitable variations in heating element power.

Like with any other toaster some inconsistency in outcome does take place when toaster was reloaded hot. In such instance you need to reduce the time one step or so, or use the reheating button, but it does the same job consistently every time from cold start while memorizing last setting.

I would recommend this unit.

"Nice Toaster" 2010-09-23

We needed a toaster that could toast long pieces of bread and this is almost perfect. The bread does not evenly toast on both sides but it is close so it is more of a visual issue than a toasting issue. It is nice that you can also get bagels into the slots and it does a real nice job on bagels especially when you remember to push the bagel button! I rate this a good buy.

"Lousy toaster" 2010-08-24
By Diane (Iowa)
I thought I was getting a top of the line toaster but it was not. Some of the heating wires did not heat. Would not toast about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom no matter which toasting number was set. The lift only lifted the toast up about 1/4" so still could not get it out of there at times. Not impressed. Returned to Amazon.com for refund.
