Product Description

The Dualit toaster is outstanding in the field, not just for its industrial retro good looks, but also for its performance. It has ProHeat elements and wide slots capable of handling very thick slices, yet the adjustable wire guards will accommodate themselves to thinner bread too. The timer knob allows you to select light, medium, or dark toast and at the end of the cycle the toast remains in the slots until you eject it with the knob - this keeps the toast warm, but because the unit shuts off at the end of the cycle your toast won't be burnt. Sturdy metal housing and heating elements made from the finest quality clear mica and 80/20 nickel chrome are good indicators that this is a toaster that will stand the test of time. In fact the Dualit toaster was designed for commercial use in English hotels and restaurants where the toaster may be in continual use for 8 hours, mandating that the heating elements be of heavy construction.

"Don't let the price fool you.............." 2010-10-23

I bought this toaster for my husband. He wanted it because he read somewhere Queen Elizabeth
has this same toaster. Anyway, it's expensive and makes lousy toast. The bell that rings
when the toast is done broke not long after getting it. Now I have to unplug it to turn it off.
My whole kitchen filled with smoke the other day. It's in the trash now, waiting for pick-up.

"Six Years Old and Still Going Strong" 2010-07-11

I can't complain about the little quirks because this toaster was a gift that was bought at Williams Sonoma. In the early days there were many times that I wanted to get rid of it, but couldn't justify it since it worked. Yes, I've had to stuff certain sizes of bread in it and squish fat bagels, and felt like throwing it through the kitchen window, but over time I learned to love it. It's awful sturdy, really pretty, oozes quality, and looks so bright and shinny in my kitchen. And it's got a life time warranty since it's from Williams Sonoma. They come from England and each toaster is hand built by the same person from start to finish. No assembly line here. Kind of impressive.

Times change and so do eating habits. Mine changed to healthy. I don't eat bagels anymore. I only eat corn rye and sprouted rye from Trader Joe's and Thomas's whole wheat english muffins and sometimes I splurge on crumpets, all which fit nicely into the toaster. When I get to the big slices of the corn rye I just cut the slice in half. Works for me. Plus I hardly burn any bread anymore since I've learned how long each item takes.

Would I buy one of these new Dualits? I don't think so as mine is going to last forever since it has a lifetime warranty. But the two new upgraded ones at Wiliams Sonoma look awesome and have all kinds of new settings and I will admit to drooling over them. However, the four slice is $339 and the two slice is $256 and I can think of other uses for that kind of money. If you are rich, or willing to eat beans for a while and want a quality toaster, go for it. I might add that those colored ones that I saw on Amazon and other places are really ugly and are garish and cheap looking IMHO. Stick with the stainless from Williams Sonoma.

"Best toaster!" 2010-06-14

Love this toaster - it works beautifully, is very well made and not made in China! What more can you ask!!

"Overpriced but works well" 2010-03-10

I received a refurbished canary yellow Dualit as a house-warming gift.

Pros:

1. Fast heating - haven't had a problem with it taking ages to heat up. For first time toasting in the mornings, I just set the timer to go a minute extra and the toast comes out just fine.
2. Myriad of really pretty colors - these toasters really ARE pretty.
3. There's a little arrow on the the timer knob that I've found keeps toasts to a perfect level (between 2 - 3 minutes).
4. The little lever that helps the toast go up and down is pretty nifty and really works when you have things that are too big for the slots (see (5) and Cons (3) below).
5. Since there is no pop-up mechanism, the toast stays warm in the toaster until you use the nifty little lever to bring it up. As an avid fan of crisp Marmite soldiers, this is an awesome feature.

Cons:

1. Large countertop footprint. You can kill a buffalo with this.
2. Sometimes uneven toasting - I can't figure out if the top gets darker first or the other way around. It's a little aggravating but it doesn't happen all the time.
3. The much touted "wide-slots" isn't really that wide. A bagel can barely fit in there without any external help.

In conclusion, I would never actively pay $200 for a toaster like this, even if it's heavy and looks really, really good, and is a British institution. It toasts well (most times), is easy to use and seems durable. But I guess the same can be said of those $10 toasters you get at Walgreens.

"DUALIT HAS POOR QUALITY ELECTRA-CRAFT HAS POOR SERVICE" 2010-02-16

I have bought three of these toasters. The first one lasted for about 6 years. The second had to be sent back three times for warranty work. The third one stopped working right after the warranty ran out 16 months. All three had the same problem. The dial switch went bad. Electra-Craft the National Distributors have the worst service possible. The fact that Dualit's quality has gone down along with the only service company you can use knows you have to pay them and arm and leg for fixing simple problems I would recommend you stay away from these toasters. Considering the price you would expect more quality and service. But the Jersey boys of Electra-Craft don't care enough.
